On a hybridized society it is quite common the overlaying of interests, habits and actions by the ones living on it. However, truth is that these superimpositions are temporary, and eventually generates trends to be followed in very specific manners.

Facing popular culture as essentially contemporary, one can foresee innumerous movements that pop up from the quotidian and beg for discussion and observations.

For that matter, CIANTEC invites professors, researchers, students and professionals to deliberate about this popular face the contemporary reality, opening spaces for arts, new technology and communication.

The subjects of this issue are divided as follow, but not restricted to:

Visita dos estudantes do EJA do Colégio Unificado à exposição do Bispo do Rosário no Santander

Gente, foi um tempo muito bom esse que passamos juntos nesse primeiro semestre de 2012.

Espero que continuemos nos encontrando por aí e no ano que vem quero vê-los lá no Ensino Médio comigo!

Obrigado pela visita ao Santander, foi muito divertido, vocês são ótimos parceiros e parceiras de cultura!

Abandono e descaso na Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana: o depoimento de Isabel Ramil

Eu, Isabel Ramil e o artista Eduardo Montelli estávamos com uma exposição multimídia chamada "estar como habitar" em cartaz na Casa de Cultura Mário Quintana.

Ainda que a exposição estivesse fazendo parte de um Prêmio criado pelo Instituto Estadual de Artes Visuais (IEAVI), nós tivemos que lidar, durante todo o período de montagem, com constante má vontade, incompetência, e total falta de apoio da instituição. Ainda assim fomos capazes de montar uma exposição de alto nível, como nós acreditamos que deve ser sempre. Montamos a exposição com muito cuidado, fixamos os trabalhos e os equipamentos, puxamos os fios, furamos as paredes, arrumamos as luzes. Foi uma conquista e uma raridade no contexto da CCMQ uma exposição multimídia como foi essa. 

Na sexta-feira, dia 8 de junho, a uma semana do fim da exposição, recebemos a notícia de que um dos televisores e um DVD contendo um trabalho do Eduardo, haviam sido roubados da galeria. Nesse dia, a exposição não havia sido aberta para visitação pois, como explicou a segurança, eles não souberam ligar os monitores. Quando a diretora do IEAVI, passando por lá e vendo a exposição fechada, pediu a um segurança que abrisse a porta para que ela ligasse os monitores, viram que a porta não estava de fato trancada e que faltava um monitor.

O ladrão subiu ao sétimo andar, abriu a porta sem arrombar, tirou a TV que estava bem fixada ao suporte na parede e saiu da Casa de Cultura com uma TV LCD de 24" nas mãos sem ser pecebido pelos mais de 5 seguranças que ficam no local (e que estavam bem avisados dessa exposição e dos equipamentos que lá estavam). O sistema de monitoramento de câmeras estava desligado nesse dia, pois estava com defeito. O IEAVI não se responsabiliza pela segurança das obras expostas, muito menos se elas são "tecnológicas".

Já soubemos de muitos outros casos de trabalhos roubados em exposições na Casa de Cultura, e achamos que já é tempo de isso acabar. A grande questão aqui não é o roubo da Televisão em si, mas o abandono vergonhoso da instituição e o descompromisso de um instituto que leva o nome das Artes Visuais mas é incapaz de garantir a manutenção e segurança das exposições que estão ali promovendo o nome da instituição e de sua diretora.

Escrevemos pois gostaríamos de denunciar essa total falta de segurança e completo descaso com as obras expostas na Casa de Cultura. Este deveria ser um local em que dá gosto expor, mas acabou se tornando um grande pesadelo. 

É importante tornar pública a incompetência, pois é somente assim que as coisas começam a se modificar. Então, se tu puderes ajudar a fazer deste um fato público, nós agradecemos muito. Devemos nos manifestar em busca da qualificação dos espaços expositivos da cidade.

YICCA 2012 Young International Contest of Contemporary Art

The competition's aim is to promote the enrolled artist, giving them chance to join the international market of contemporary art.

This aim will be pursued by taking advantage of the opportunities that the contest offers:

• exhibit of selected artworks in a private exhibition space, determined by competition, set at contemporary art gallery
  "THE CHEMISTRY GALLERY" - PRAGUE (CZECH REPUBLIC)
• improvement of the relationship between finalists and critics, curators, gallery owners, public and private art institutions that will have access to this important exhibition.
• maximum visibility access through the advertising campaign that will follow the competition and all its stages
• the works of selected artist will be published on "YICCA 2012" catalogue which will be distributed free of charge to the finalists and will be available for professionals and institutions invited during the inauguration of the event.
• the finalists of the competition will have the possibility to stay in Prague for free during the opening day, as well.

There are three ways to subscibe an artwork to the contest:

1) Subscribers not registered in YICCA communty:

The registration form must be fill out with:

• artist name and surname, pseudonym or name of artist group
• e-mail address,
• title of work (or word "untitled"),
• brief description of the work (technique, year, features etc.- max 1500 types),
• image of the work in jpg or gif format. Video must be uploaded as picture frame type (still video) requiered for submission;
• the video have to be uploaded through vimeo.com

2) Subscriber already registered in YICCA community:

Community users can submit their artworks (already inside the communty) to the contest by clicking "ADD TO CONTEST" button placed in the upper right area inside the chosen artworks page.

3) Third parties

Third parties can submit to the contest only artworks already inside the communty by clicking "ADD TO CONTEST" button placed in the upper right area inside the chosen artworks page.

Sent registration will be held in stand-by by the system until payment of the quote is made.

Se encuentra abierta la convocatoria para nuevos agentes del Centro de Investigaciones Artísticas durante el 2012. 

La convocatoria se dirige a personas con un fuerte compromiso para participar del programa independiente de formación teórica y práctica del Centro de Investigaciones Artísticas durante el 2012.

Se espera que además de participantes, las personas seleccionadas  sean  activas generadoras que aprovechen las múltiples oportunidades que ofrece la plataforma CIA para desarrollar iniciativas de interés común para la institución y sus agentes.

La convocatoria no se limita a artistas visuales sino que es amplia en cuanto a tipos de práctica artística – performáticas, sonoras, conceptuales, cinemáticas, informáticas, etc-- siempre que estén abiertas a la experimentación y la colaboración.

Los artistas seleccionados participarán en forma gratuita de un amplio programa de talleres, cursos y seminarios, tutorías, conferencias, ciclos, etc.

El Centro de Investigaciones Artísticas provee:

Docentes de nivel internacional

Formación teórico-discursiva

Competencias para la presentación de la propia obra

Experiencia en trabajos de colaboración

Visitas de estudio y crítica de obra

Conexiones internacionales e intercambios

Intervención  práctica en proyectos del CIA

Gestión de iniciativas personales en el marco del CIA: ciclos, presentaciones, grupos de estudio, etc.

ELEGIBILIDAD 

No hay limitaciones de edad o nacionalidad para presentarse.

Tampoco existen restricciones en cuanto a tipo de prácticas o disciplinas.

Se requiere que los postulantes tengan experiencias de realización en su actividad.

Las becas serán individuales (no se aceptan colectivos de artistas).

Para postularse, se debe enviar una carpeta con material a CIA (Tucumán 3758 - C1189AAV - Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires - Argentina) antes del 9 de marzo de 2012 19hs. Se tomarán en cuenta todas las postulaciones que lleguen hasta esa fecha inclusive y las enviadas con sello postal de hasta el 9 de marzo de 2012 inclusive.

La oficina de CIA estará abierta para recepción de carpetas de Lunes a Viernes de 13 a 19 hs.

JURADO

Un jurado seleccionará a los participantes del Programa y sus decisiones serán comunicadas durante la segunda semana de marzo de 2012.

CONDICIONES 

Los agentes seleccionados podrán participar de todas las actividades del Centro de Investigaciones Artísticas durante el 2012.

El CIA no provee traslados, viáticos, residencia, gastos de producción de obra ni estipendios de ningún tipo.

Es condición esencial de esta beca que los seleccionados tengan disposición horaria para asistir a los talleres, cursos y seminarios, así como para cumplir con lecturas e investigaciones.

Del mismo modo se exigirá rigurosa puntualidad. 

A los 3 y 6 meses de iniciadas las actividades se realizarán evaluaciones individuales.

Al terminar el ciclo en el mes de diciembre los participantes deberán presentar un breve informe por escrito de su experiencia en CIA.

Se firmará un convenio entre el Centro y las personas seleccionadas.

Presentación

El conocimiento se nos ha vendido desde un enfoque euro-centrista, con un discurso homogeneizador, un pensamiento único e impuesto en un modelo económico globalizado y con un solo interés, el mercado. Tampoco el arte se ha salvado de esta mirada limitadora dejando fuera de su campo visual, lejos de su interés, realidades menores, marginales, excéntricas… a veces, simplemente, distintas, solo tolerables en su condición de irreductible “otredad”. Muchas de estas realidades habían permanecido “ocultas”, “evitadas” pero hoy muchas de las “minorías” han adquirido la capacidad de la auto-representación que las ha hecho algo más visibles.

Más allá, tenemos que mirar y ver la realidad con ojos heterodoxos, creativos e innovadores para vencer la invisibilización de todo lo que se sale los centros de poder. Tenemos que luchar por el cambio de mirada que nos traiga el giro epistemológico necesario, que identificando y defendiendo los diversos intereses nos ayude a apostarnos en los márgenes, en la órbita de la periferia desde la que ser capaces de cuestionar estructuras y ser capaces de actuar desde la responsabilidad social y favorecer la circulación de un pensamiento, un arte, un conocimiento diverso y enriquecedor.

En esta ocasión queremos ofrecer un espacio de discusión donde seamos capaces de vernos hasta qué punto somos estructura consciente o masa mediatizada, y hasta qué punto nos hemos entendido como parte de una sociedad a la que debemos aportar desde el arte y su ámbito educativo con prácticas desarticuladoras de este “mercado global” en cuya órbita ya estamos todo el mundo lo queramos o no.

La filosofía de la periferia, para nosotros, es la filosofía que flexibiliza la mirada, la que nos hace crecer para abarcar más. Si la filosofía de los centros de poder no es otra cosa que una ontología que enuncia una mismidad, la filosofía de la periferia es la de la otredad, la de las otras realidades, de las que se ocultan, de las que se evitan, de las que no se ven.

Tengamos el valor de mirar si nos hemos convertido, sin darnos cuenta, al convencionalismo y a “rogar nuestra aceptación social”. Tengamos el valor de comprobar que no hemos entrado ni en la élite de los excéntricos ni en el saco de los que miran el dedo que señala la luna.

Seamos radicales y saquemos el arte y su educación de los mecanismos estancos y llevémoslo al activismo periférico que facilita el movimiento de pensamiento y el intercambio cultural.

Seamos radicales en nuestra manera de entender el arte, no porque seamos modernos sino porque tenemos el valor de cuestionar las inercias del poder.

Seamos radicales cuando pensemos nuestra participación-acción en la sociedad.

Seamos radicales cuando pensemos nuestra responsabilidad profesional.

Tate is delighted to announce the appointment of Colombian curator José Roca (b.1962) as the Estrellita B. Brodsky Adjunct Curator of Latin American Art. The post, which reflects Tate’s continuing commitment to broadening the geographical scope of the Collection, is for a period of three years from 2012 to 2015. 

José Roca began working in the post on 9 January 2012. He will take a leading role in developing Tate’s holdings of art from Latin America and will work closely with Tate’s Latin American Acquisitions Committee, now celebrating its tenth year. He will also represent Tate in Latin America, further developing and adding to the strong working relationships Tate has within the region. He will be based in his home city of Bogotá but will make regular visits to London. 

José Roca was the chief curator of the 8th Bienal do Mercosul (2011) in Porto Alegre, Brazil. For a decade he managed the arts programme and oversaw the development of the collection at the Banco de la República in Bogotá, establishing it as one of the most respected institutions in the Latin American circuit. Roca was a co-curator of the I Poly/graphic Triennial in San Juan, Puerto Rico (2004), the 27th Bienal de São Paulo, Brazil (2006) and the Encuentro de Medellín MDE07 (2007), and was the Artistic Director of Philagrafika 2010, Philadelphia’s international Triennial celebrating print in contemporary art. He served on the awards jury for the 52nd Venice Biennial (2007). José Roca has also curated numerous solo exhibitions focusing on the work of artists such as Oscar Munoz, Antoni Muntadas, Eugenio Dittborn, Regina Silveira and Julio Alpuy among others.

His expertise and flair will be of huge benefit and will help to deepen the relationships we have already established in the region as well as forge new partnerships and strengthen our holdings from this important and dynamic part of the world”. 

José Roca said: “For many years I have worked on fostering the appreciation of the art from Latin America both locally and abroad. I am honoured to be able to continue working in this direction with such a serious and prestigious institution such as Tate”.

Notes to Editors

Estrellita Bograd Brodsky has a Ph.D. in Art History from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University (2009) after receiving her Master’s degree in Art History from Hunter College (1996). 

Estrellita served as Co-Chair of the Board of Trustees at the New York museum El Museo del Barrio until 2003 after having co-edited the book and co-organised the exhibition: Taíno: Pre-Columbian Art and Culture of the Caribbean in 1997. She also curated Carlos Cruz-Diez: (In)formed by Color at the Americas Society in New York and has taught on Post War Latin American artists at Hunter College. Forthcoming exhibitions which she is curating include Jesús Soto: Paris and Beyond, 1950-1970 at the New York University Grey Gallery in January 2012 and Julio Le Parc: Labyrinths in collaboration with El Museo del Barrio for 2013. 

Estrellita B Brodsky endowed the Estrellita Brodsky Curator for Latin American Art at the Museum of Modern Art, New York and is a member of the museum’s Latin American and Caribbean Acquisitions Committee. She is a board member of the American Friends of the Pompidou and serves on the Latin American Acquisitions Committee at Tate Modern. She was a founding member of the Multicultural Audience Development Advisory Committee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. She received the 2011 Manhattan Borough President’s Outstanding Achievement award in recognition of her work in the field of Latin American Art.
